Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE)

The Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments, or IMPROVE, program serves to monitor visibility conditions within federal class 1 areas. The program began to aid states in developing their state implementation plans. IMPROVE is led by a committee of personnel from multiple agencies and regional-state organizations.

The goals of IMPROVE include:

• Characterizing current visibility and aerosol conditions within Class 1 areas.
• Identifying chemical species and emission sources responsible for visibility impairment
• Documenting long-term trends to assess progress toward national visibility goals
• Provide regional haze monitoring to represent all Class 1 areas
