Guideline 8
When feasible, use ignition patterns and methods which minimize smoke production
- Firing technique should be correlated with burning objectives, fuels, topography and weather factors to minimize smoke and prevent damage to forest resources
- Consider use of “backing fires” to minimize smoke and air quality impacts
- If there are nearby sensitive populations, other techniques that produce more heat and lift smoke should be considered
